Deaf Community Volunteer of the Year
Linda Cross

Sophie Li, a Deaf entrepreneur and advocate, is being recognised for her leadership in developing SignHow, a community-driven online sign language dictionary. SignHow launched in August 2023, and the platform has grown rapidly, reaching 3,000 users and expanding its sign library to over 6,500 signs. Sophie led the creation of the platform alongside a small Deaf and hard of hearing team and organised successful community events, including Signing Parties in Brisbane and Melbourne. Her commitment to the Deaf community is further shown through partnerships with organisations and her efforts to include Syrian Sign Language to support refugees. Sophie’s work continues to bridge communication and foster inclusivity.

William Bone, a dedicated and hardworking member of our community. As the owner of a gardening business and a volunteer with the Victorian State Emergency Service, he has shown exceptional commitment to serving others. William is actively working to create opportunities for more Deaf individuals to join and volunteer in emergency services, breaking down barriers on the front lines. Rising quickly through the ranks of his local unit, he is now Deputy Controller in charge of Operations and Assets. William demonstrates every day that being Deaf is no obstacle to success, inspiring those around him to strive for excellence and present a positive image of the Deaf community.
