The Australian Deaf Census project has achieved significant national and international recognition, with its suite of infographics—designed by Storyfolk for Deaf Australia—receiving three honours at the Betterfuture Design Awards, including a coveted World Design Award.
The project was awarded:
These accolades celebrate the innovative visual communication approach used to translate the extensive findings of the Deaf Census into accessible, engaging formats.
Led by Deaf Australia and supported by past ILC (Information, Linkages and Capacity Building) funding, the Deaf Census gathered vital national data on Deaf people’s experiences, identity, language use, and community priorities. The resulting 200‑page report captured rich insights into the lives and perspectives of Deaf community members across the country.
To ensure these findings could be easily understood and widely shared, Deaf Australia partnered with Storyfolk to transform the data into compelling infographics. These visuals distilled complex information into clear, powerful storytelling tools designed to support advocacy, influence policy, and raise public awareness.
A Milestone for Deaf‑Led Work
The recognition from Betterfuture highlights the impact of a Deaf‑led initiative that places community voices at the centre. The awards also underscore the importance of accessible design in amplifying the experiences and priorities of Deaf people.
Deaf Australia extends its gratitude to every member of the Deaf community who contributed to the Census. Your participation made this achievement possible and continues to drive meaningful change.
